Why not Signal? XMPP is federated. If the XMPP service I use today
loses my trust or stops running I can easily switch service provider. If
I can’t find a good service provider I can run my own server. If the
powers that be decide we aren’t allowed to run XMPP servers we can hide
them in encrypted tunnels. AFAIK Signal is great today but without
federation it’s a single point of failure and a very large target that
could be compromised in various ways.
